CAR TYPES

We use six types of freight car on the Lake Town & Shire. To be a good operator, you need to know the names of these car types. We also use a short code for each car type. You will see these codes on labels on some of our sidings. These tell you what kinds of freight cars are loaded at that siding. So to be a good operator, you also need to know the code for each type of freight car.

A boxcar has solid sides and a large door on each side. It also has a roof with no doors in it. On a real railroad, boxcars can be many different colors. But all of the boxcars on the Lake Town & Shire are painted a rusty brown. On the Lake Town & Shire, boxcars are used to move canned fish, toys and chairs, clothing, ale, bags of grain, and pipeweed. The code for boxcars is BX.

A refrigerated car or reefer has solid sides and a large door on each side just like a boxcar. But a reefer also has small doors on top where ice is placed in the car to keep it cool. On a real railroad, reefers can be many different colors. But all of the reefers on the Lake Town and Shire are painted white. On the Lake Town & Shire, reefers are used to move fruits, vegetables, and meat. The code for a reefer is RF.

A stock car is used to move cows, sheep, and pigs. A stock car has a roof with no doors in it just like a boxcar. It also has two large doors in its side like a boxcar or a reefer. But the sides of a stock car are not solid. They are built with spaces between the boards like a fence. This lets air into the car for the animals to breath and also to keep them from getting too hot. All the stock cars on the Lake Town & Shire are painted black. The code for stock cars is ST.

A flat car has no roof and no sides. All flat cars on the Lake Town & Shire are painted rusty brown, the same as boxcars. On the Lake Town & Shire, flat cars are used to move lumber. The code for flat cars is FL.

An ore car is a flat car that has had a container built onto it to hold ore. Ore cars are used on the Lake Town & Shire to carry mithril ore from the Mines of Moria to Rivendell yard. The code for ore cars is OR.

A coal car has low sides and no roof. All coal cars on the Lake Town and Shire are painted black. The code for coal cars is CO.
